The Zanzibar horse club started in 2018 with 3 beautiful rescue ponies of Arabian/Somali mix called Lu Lu, Crumble and Bob. All 3 of the ponies spent 6 months training, eating and relaxing before welcoming guests. Since then, the horses have proven to be popular with guests, settled in and become a central part of the Zanzibar horse club family.
Since then, we’ve gone from strength to strength and now have a total of 40 horses and 16 staff. We are currently located at 3 stables in Nungwi, Kendwa and our main 10-acre facility in Kidoti village. This is where we do all our training, breeding and this is where the horses come to rest. We have a wide range of horses for all ages, all sizes and capabilities. To find out more about our horses please go to the section "meet the horses"
All 3 of our stables are open most of the year, except for the months of April and May when we close operations and the horses are moved to our Kidoti ranch to rest and graze in the paddocks. During these 2 months the horses are given all their annual vaccinations.
Also, at the Kidoti ranch we have our breeding mares, stallions and foals. We also have some miniature ponies and a couple of rescue horses. There are around 8 acres of paddocks, a lunging ring and an amazing outdoor 60m x 30m arena, this is where we train all our horses and indeed staff. All our horses spend approx. 6 months at Kidoti before being used in the Kendwa and Nungwi stables.
We offer a variety of accompanied rides to suit all tastes and levels; including 1- and 2-hour beach rides, we have an amazing daily sunset ride from Kidoti at 5pm, we also offer swimming with horses – all these suitable for beginners and 1st timers. For the more experienced, we have 2-, 3- and 4-hour rides that can cover distances of 25km. All our rides are dependent on the tides, so for example we don’t ride at high tide, but this is a great time to swim with the horses, because of this the times we ride vary from day to day.

The future is looking great and we will continue to operate from our 3 bases in the north of the island, however we are always looking to expand the rides and experiences we offer and we are currently working hard to link up the Nungwi beaches with the beaches of Matemwe and Kiwengwa, we trying to do this by keeping the rides to the beach and bush and avoiding roads. Once done, this will be our biggest ride covering 5 to 6 hours and approx. 40km. Watch this space.
Furthermore, we are in discussion with the Government of Zanzibar regarding access to the island’s largest national park, Kichwele Forest Reserve. Offering more trails through this amazing forest, teeming with native wildlife - monkeys, bush babies, dik diks and more.
All our beach rides take place on the Kendwa and Nungwi beaches, consistently voted a top 10 beach in the world and our amazing Kidoti sunset ride takes in the breathtaking sunset.
Feel free to stop by and see our stables and meet the horses. The Nungwi stables are situated opposite the rear entrance to the Z hotel on the Rear Nungwi Village Road. The Kendwa stables are located on the side road that borders the Zuri hotel.
Our main stables & training grounds at Kidoti are located 50 metres off the main Nungwi road approx. 100 metres from Kidoti school. We are actively involved in animal welfare on the island, and we work with the islands oldest and biggest animal charity Zaaso. 10% of all our profits are donated to Zaaso monthly – a donation-based horse and donkey sanctuary who also provide general animal clinic services.

No formal photoshoots are allowed. For everyone's safety, we require all riders to wear helmets, boots, and long trousers. Please note that our weight limit for riders is a maximum of 90 kilograms at Nungwi Stables and 80 kilograms at Kidoti Stables. We respectfully ask that women beyond their fifth month of pregnancy refrain from riding. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide transfer services to the stables.
Bob is a 12-year-old gelding and stands at around 14’2 hands; he was one of the 3 founding horses at the Zanzibar Horse Club.

Due to the recent Covid 19 worldwide pandemic, to keep our guests and indeed our staff safe, we have made some changes to Safari By Z that we would like to make you aware. We believe that with careful planning and consideration by our staff and guests we can continue to provide the best hospitality services on safari. For now, this may be our new norm.
New routines:
All our staff have received full training in health and safety-related to the COVID-19 virus and are required to be extra vigilant with their personal hygiene and daily routines.
Health condition of driver-guides will be monitored for not less than a week before being assigned to take clients on safari.
City transfer and safari vehicles will be regularly disinfected before picking up clients, especially the high-touch surfaces and seats.
Our meet and greet teams at airports will still be there to accompany guests into transfer vehicles. While our vehicles are already cleaned between transfers, they will now also be disinfected between each use.
To keep social distancing, safari vehicles with 4-window seats will be redesigned to take only 2 people in the passenger cabin. Safari vehicles with 6-window seats will still be available for families/group of friends wishing to travel together in one vehicle.
The driver-guide will be at hand to oversee guests observe the recommended physical distancing at park entry gates, picnic sites, and while checking in at accommodation facilities.
Each guest will receive their own adventure kit, which includes a Wildlife Guides' Journal, mini fan and hand sanitizers, as well as a pair of binoculars – all in cleaned before each new set of guests
The driver-guide will take necessary personal protection precautions at all times. Guests are encouraged to come with their own masks;

Tanzania wasn't Really affected by Covid 19 to the same extent as most other countries, especially those in Europe and South America.
