About Zanzibar Horse Club

The stables started with 3 beautiful horses of Arabian/Somali mix called Lu Lu, Crumble and Bob. All 3 of the horses spent 6 months training, eating and relaxing before welcoming guests. Since then, the horses have proven to be popular with guests, settled in and become part of the family.

Since then, we’ve gone from strength to strength and now have a total of 25 horses at the stables in Nungwi and our paddocks & ranch in Kidoti village. - We have a wide range of horses for all ages, all sizes and capabilities. To find out more about our horses please go to the section "meet the horses"

Our Nungwi stables are open most of the year, except for the months of April and May when the horses are moved to our Kidoti farm to rest and graze in the paddocks.

Also, at Kidoti farm we have several donkeys and horses - either being trained for future riding or retired rescue horses. We are also running a small breeding programme for the Appaloosa horse breed.

We offer a variety of accompanied rides to suit all tastes; beach rides both in the morning and evening including sunset, swimming with horses, cultural rides in Nungwi village.   However, all our rides are dependent on the tides, so for example we don’t ride at high tide but this is a great time to swim with the horses.

We offer 2 new rides that will be our longest trails. A 3 to 4 hour Nungwi to Kidoti Village ride covering over 8km of beaches, isolated villages and rural farmland of north Western Zanzibar - a truly unique experience of Zanzibar, taking you off the beaten track.

We will also be introducing an even better and longer ride to the amazing sandbanks. This ride is called the 3 sandbanks ride, it will be approx 3 hours long. We will ride along the rustic unspoilt North east coast, cantering and trotting at intervals before returning along the 3 famous sandbanks, moving from one to another, galloping through the shallow waters. Both our new rides are only suitable for experienced riders that can canter and gallop proficiently.

We have a new amazing 90 minute ride that will leave daily at 9am and 5pm from our stables in Kidoti. This amazing new rides will take in 2 fabulous viewpoints, perfect for the photographs, the ride also visits the most remote villages, jungles and farmlands of Kidoti & Kigunda. This ride is for all levels and is our only ride that is at fixed times daily as it is not tide dependant. The 5pm ride taking in the amazing sunset.

Furthermore, we are in discussion with the Government of Zanzibar regarding access to the island’s largest national park, Kichwele Forest Reserve. Offering more trails through this amazing forest, teeming with native wildlife - monkeys, bush babies, dik diks and more.

All our beach rides take place on the Northern Nungwi beaches, consistently voted a top 10 beach in the world and our evening rides take in the amazing sunset.

Feel free to stop by and see our stables and meet the horses. We are situated opposite the rear entrance to the Z hotel on Rear Village Road. Or jump in a taxi and travel the 8km south of nungwi to visit our main stables & training grounds at Kidoti, one of the most beautiful areas in Zanzibar. 10% of all our profits are donated to Zaaso – a donation-based horse and donkey sanctuary who also provide general animal clinic services.

All rides can now be booked online upto 2 months in advance. Click here to book now.

No formal photoshoots are allowed. For everyone's safety, we require all riders to wear helmets, boots, and long trousers. Please note that our weight limit for riders is a maximum of 90 kilograms at Nungwi Stables and 80 kilograms at Kidoti Stables. We respectfully ask that women beyond their fifth month of pregnancy refrain from riding. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide transfer services to the stables.
